Sheryl Sandberg broke her silence on Tuesday about the death of her husband and SurveyMonkey CEO Dave Goldberg, who died suddenly from severe head trauma after collapsing while exercising last week.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Facebook's COO thanked family and friends for the "outpouring of love" and recounted memories including how she met Goldberg almost 20 years ago after moving to Los Angeles.

"He showed me the Internet for the first time, planned fun outings, took me to temple for the Jewish holidays, introduced me to much cooler music than I had ever heard," Sandberg wrote, adding that they shared 11 happy years of love, marriage and partnership. "

He gave me the experience of being deeply understood, truly supported and completely and utterly loved

He gave me the experience of being deeply understood, truly supported and completely and utterly loved — and I will carry that with me always. Most importantly, he gave me the two most amazing children in the world."

Sandberg went on to describe the days since her husband's death as "completely unexpected hell – the darkest and saddest moments of my life." Goldberg's funeral took place Tuesday.

According to a source close to the family, Goldberg died Friday evening after the 47-year-old executive collapsed while exercising on vacation with family and friends at Palmasola, a private residence in Punta Mita, Mexico. Efforts to revive him off-site and at a hospital were unsuccessful. Cause of death was severe head trauma, according to local officials.
